Classified as a research university (very high research activity) by the Carnegie Foundation for Advancement of Teaching, UH Mānoa is on par with members of the prestigious Association of American Universities in attracting extramural funding. The 10-campus UH System topped half a billion dollars in the 2022 fical year, with the flagship Mānoa campus accounting for $366 million of that. The university was placed among the top 1% of universities worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities and ranked 12th internationally for earth and environmental sciences by Nature Index based on publications in Nature and 67 other prestigious, peer-reviewed journals. In 2021, it was selected to host NOAA's Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research.
